Modern threats require a modern response. It’s simple, really; the days of being able to bury your head in the sand and not worry about your systems are so over!
I read a stat the other day that surprised me. It stated that roughly 80% (80%!!!) of the world’s digital workloads are still on-prem. I’d be willing to bet that the majority of those workloads are also owned by small business or small enterprises. And I’d be willing to bet that a good percentage of that group would also be somewhat behind the curve in managing digital security threats (stating things charitably).
Many small businesses simply don’t invest in the “basics” like a decent firewall, proper anti-virus and anti-malware tools, management of updates to Windows and application software. Too many still soldier on with unpatched Windows 7 machines or worse. Quite a few still rely on (arguably) archaic, generic email servers hosted on their external webhosts. And all of this comes out of the mindset of “affordability” as in “we can’t afford to buy a good firewall or proper antivirus tools or use a modern Cloud service like Office 365”.
Well, people, I’m here to tell you that you can’t afford NOT to invest in these things! The bad guys love all of you who continue to stick your heads in the sand and ignore the reality of the modern world. They continue to phish you and get away with it. They install their data and credential sniffer bots on your systems and then destroy your systems with their ransomware attacks. If you think you can afford the damage to your business caused by a bad guy ransacking your system for customer data or critical system credentials then, by all means, continue to ignore security issues.
In other words, people, get with the program! Modern threats require you to be proactive. You have to put modern defenses in place in order to keep your systems, your customers, your users AND your business safe. The cost to NOT do so is simply to great for any business to bear in the long run. There are companies put out of business on an almost daily basis by bad guys lurking on the ‘Net because they chose to not make the investments. Don’t be one of them.
